Mitch McConnell exemplifies a version of Washington politics that I detest -- not because he’s a rightwing Republican but because he doesn’t give a damn about the central institutions of our democracy as long as he wins.

So, for example, he refused to hold hearings on Merrick Garland, Obama’s Supreme Court pick, but pushed Neil Gorsuch through the Senate by changing the voting rules on Supreme Court nominees.

And he developed the Senate Republican healthcare plan in secret, without holding a single hearing (although now we know it will cause 22 million people to lose their coverage).

McConnell will go down as one of the worst Senate leaders in history because his legacy will be a Senate that’s less capable of governing.
