Fyre Festival Disaster at one of my favorite islands in the Exumas, Bahamas

Ron Alexander remembering all the good times we had together.

Norman's Cay, Exumas, Bahamas used to be a favorite anchorage for our Marine Science under Sail org. There was a small Diving photography resort there, that showed off their photos with a slide show a couple of nights a week. Then one year, guard dogs and armed men patrolled the shore. We were not allowed to come ashore and did not feel comfortable anchoring there. The last time, we anchored about 8 miles away, and we had to run from high speed Cigarette boats. It was good, I had an inflatable that could navigate the reefs that was too shallow for their boats. They were Pablo Escobars' cocaine smugglers. Beautiful Norman's Cay had become a smugglers isle. It was the island in the movie BLOW starring Johnnie Depp. The DC3 plane sunk in the lagoon was part of Escobar' s operation. Looking at the result of Fyre, it appears that coke was left behind and the organizers' snorted one line over the limit. I wish the divers would return. Ron Alexander
