Thought For the Week-Pittsburgh and Kansas Rev. Ed Kosak, Charleston
We love Unity because it is a positive path to spiritual living. We focus on what is right about ourselves and the world. We practice prayers and meditation as the foundations of our life. I will never apologize for practicing these principles. Plus, we focus more on Easter than we do Good Friday, (Jesus did not save us from our sins, he teaches us how to save ourselves from the hells we put ourselves through by rising above them!).
AND, never let it be said that Unity does not care. When events like last week's take place, (The Pittsburgh stabbings and Kansas shootings at the Jewish Center), we respond with prayers, grief and compassion. We do not bury our heads in the sand at Unity. Why? Because we would be uncaring if we did bury our heads. That's not the message of Jesus, Buddha, Dorothy Day, Cesar Chavez, Dr. King, etc. So I appreciate that our church responded so well this past Sunday by its outpouring of prayer and grief around these two tragic events. Some of us bravely took a look at our shadow side as well so as to heal it.
The world understandably focuses on the negative. And we need to be aware of such things so we can avoid doing them again. Yet, focusing on the negative just perpetuates the negative. Because the world focuses on the negative, Unity stands as a bright light that we also need to be equally if not more aware of what is right about the world...while we let go of our shadow side, and we grieve and care.
It's a balancing act. This will help us to Rise above it all.
What do you think?
