I was blessed to interview two WWll vets.

I was blessed to interview two WWll vets. at the VA Hospice today, wonderful men who served heroically after being drafted as teenagers. I left smiling with my heart even wider open as they appeared to too! One was a combat medic wounded in Okinawa and wonders how any medic could not be wounded in heavy fighting like Okinawa (where my Father fought). He became a medic because he did not have "killer instinct". He worked in Civil Rights after the war and helped write the Equal... Employment Act. He said he was kicked out of grad. school for working with the "trouble maker" Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The other Vet. served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He had trouble with racism in the segregated army at the time, and is angry that no one revealed that he contracted malaria over there (did not find out until a few months ago). He becamed ordained at Mother Emanuel AME church here in Charleston after the war. And says his Christian faith protected him. He says the Bible predicts war ("rumors of war") and we have to do what we have to do to protect our country. They are both very happy at their treatment by the VA for the last year or two - wonderful men who are definitely heros!
